Finding Your Place in Yoga: A Guide for Beginners and the Overwhelmed

Is Chameleon Yoga for you?

Well that is a big question! The short answer is maybe, so lets dive into the type of people who typically find my classes.

1. The Beginner: Finding Your Starting Point Without Intimidation

  • Recognizing the Desire to Start Yoga

Many new students know yoga could benefit them but feel unsure where to begin. Maybe you have checked out some social media content, seen some videos and thought "wow that is cool but how am I supposed to do that?"

  • Easy-to-Understand Philosophy

I offer simple, clear, and approachable explanations to demystify yoga practices. Yoga doesn't need to be complicated, it is simply a way for you to connect with your body and mind. You don't need to be able to touch your toes, do a handstand or speak Sanskrit.

  • Simple Classes with Clear Guidance

Classes focus on straightforward instructions ensuring beginners can follow comfortably and confidently. I like to keep things simple, but that doesn't mean it will always be easy. There is still plenty of room for challenge and growth, but we start from a simple foundation.

  • Addressing Intimidation from Language and Class Descriptions

Many new students assume they won’t be able to keep up because of unfamiliar yoga terminology; I intentionally avoid this barrier. I have found that people get much more from classes when they understand what I'm talking about.

  • Encouragement to Explore Without Pressure

The environment promotes patience and self-compassion, reassuring beginners they can learn at their own pace. When we slow down and take time in the poses it gives you the opportunity to explore and grow. I will always give you options, and it is your job to play around and find what works for you.

2. The One Put Off by Past Yoga Experiences: A Fresh Chance to Feel Included

  • Understanding Past Negative Experiences

Difficult-to-follow classes, overtalkative teachers, cliques, and feeling judged are common reasons people leave yoga behind. I have been to these classes, the teacher acting like they alone have the secret knowledge to unlock enlightenment, the groups huddled in the corner whispering, the judging looks and being told I am doing it wrong.

  • Freedom to Explore at a Steady Pace

Classes allow space for students to move mindfully without pressure to perform perfectly. There is no such thing as perfect, there is only what feels right and works for you. That is why I give you the freedom to explore the practice and expand your experience.

  • Intentional Periods of Silence

Silence in class creates moments for reflection and concentration, enhancing personal connection to the practice. I have been to classes where the teacher talks endlessly about going inwards and noticing my own thoughts but then doesn't give me the space to do it. I understand that silence can sometimes feel uncomfortable, but that is where the magic happens.

  • Inclusive Community Culture

The studio fosters a welcoming atmosphere where all are accepted, with no exclusive groups or judgment. We all arrive together, set up together and encourage each other. The goal of the studio is to create community, to build connections and create lasting relationships. When we practice together we grow together.

  • Challenging the Assumption that All Yoga Classes Are the Same

I firmly believe there is a Yoga class for everyone. There should be diversity of teaching methods, because we aren't all on the same path. I am aware that my classes aren't for everyone and that is more than ok. I know the people I can help and I know what I offer is perfect for them, so why dilute it and try to appeal to everyone. So if you read this and think this is not what I am looking for, keep looking. I promise you will find the right teacher for you.

  • Reassurance About Being Accepted Regardless of Form or Alignment

I believe in personal growth over perfection, reducing anxiety about appearance or technique. No two bodies are the same, we all practice differently. We all have strengths and room for improvement, it is my task to help you find what works for you.

3. The Overstressed and Looking for Direction: Cultivating Mindfulness and Balance

  • Acknowledging Work-Related Stress and Mental Overload

Many people find it hard to "switch off" from work, or family life in their personal time. We live in a culture that makes us feel guilty for taking some "me time" we are told that self care is selfish and that work is more important. But how can we possibly give to others and be at our best if we are constantly stressed out?

  • Providing Space to Quiet the Busy Mind

When you come to a physical studio you are away from it all. Work can't call you, there are no emails to answer, you can't tidy the kitchen or hoover the floor. Even I struggle to practice at home, and I am a Yoga teacher. There is always something to do that distracts me from taking care of myself.

  • Value of Physical Health and Meditation

I teach classes that help you to get stronger and more stable, both in body and mind. Our physical practice will help you to become more mobile, reduce joint pain, relieve tired bodies and get you comfortable in yourself. The meditation and breath work helps us to calm down our minds and nervous systems so we can find a few moments peace in this busy world.

  • Addressing Feelings of Guilt About Self-Care

So many people say they would love to start Yoga but feel guilty for taking time for themselves, and I absolutely understand this. That is why I am passionate about providing a guilt free environment where you can focus on what you need for a while. I also understand that sometimes life gets in the way and we can't help it, if you need to miss a class or two that is fine. No pushy emails or messages making you feel like you need to do better.

  • Promoting Self-Compassion and Non-Judgment

I firmly believe that kindness starts at home. We need to be kind to ourselves first so that we can spread that kindness out to others. I hear so many people say they don't have the body for Yoga, can't touch their toes or meditate. To that I say "so what? everyone has to start somewhere" This space is all about you, what you need and supporting you on that journey. After all we are all in this together!
